Whether you’re for or against knowing the gender of your child before he or she is born, gender reveal parties are not showing any signs of slowing down since Jenna Myers Karvunidis invented the concept in 2008.

Baby shower guestbooks now double as guess the gender games!

We’ve certainly noticed an increase in requests for our baby shower guestbooks for guests to participate in a ‘guess the gender’ game. The guestbook features a baby bundle design hand-drawn digitally by our artist. By adding a blue or pink fingerprint (which look like balloons), they bring this charming print to life.

Just what exactly is a gender reveal party we hear you ask……

It’s often an intimate party in which the group learn the gender of the unborn child in a variety of creative and innovative ways. Parents can choose to be just as much in the dark until the big reveal by enlisting the help of close friends and/or a range of professionals such as the sonographer or a cake maker for example.

Talk me through it…..I’m still not getting it…why wouldn’t I just have a baby shower?

Baby showers are all about gifts for the babies and predominantly an all-female affair hosted by a relative or close friend of the expectant mother. Food and games are usually on the agenda.

Gender reveal parties are usually fairly quick with most people there just to learn the gender of the baby. Often it's family and close friends only, often with neither gifts or food expected.

It is of course up to you what you would like to do in the lead up to the arrival of your little one, you may even consider a combined party. Whatever you decide, we hope that you enjoy it and make the most of it!

I love the idea of a gender reveal party, so how do I go about hosting one?

  1. Book an ultrasound.

TIP: Find out the gender first before booking the date for a party, just in case the technician can’t get a clear view. Let them know if you want to know, or ask them to put the results in a sealed envelope.

     2.   Once you have the information, book a date.

TIP: Give yourselves a good six weeks to research ideas on how you’d like to reveal the gender to your guests….and perhaps, you, the parents too!

Themes, games, ideas - where to start?

Are you sporty?

Do you have a specific hobby?

Are you book lovers?

Foodies? Love to bake?

If you start with a theme you understand and can relate to, it’s easy to take it from there.

For example, if you’re a foodie, consider a gender reveal cake, in which you cut it open to reveal a pink or blue inside!

Sporty?  Pink team vs Blue team ball games. Come up with some games everyone will enjoy ending with cutting a ball open to reveal the gender.

There is now an abundance of party supplies such as:

  • Balloons
  • Gender reveal smoke
  • Confetti cannons
  • Hats, serviettes, plates, and cups, etc.

Most items are available in and around New Zealand and via the world online should you go looking! Or check out your local event hire shop they often do party packages. We love this one by Covers Decoration Hire if you are in Auckland.

And of course, if you’ve never discovered Pinterest well, do we have news for you…..!! Warning it's addictive once you start pinning ideas to your boards.

We’d love to hear your favourite gender reveal game or idea, sharing is caring - let us know and we can add it to our blog (with your permission of course!).
