People often ask me what my favourite guestbook is.

The funny thing is, it isn't always the biggest one, or the one with the most elaborate personalisation. After almost twenty years creating handcrafted keepsakes, I've realised the pieces people treasure most usually have something else in common.

They simply feel right.

A beautiful guestbook isn't really about following trends. It's about creating something that still feels just as special years after the celebration has finished.

It starts with paper.

I know... I'm a bit of a paper nerd.

But the paper is the part your guests actually experience. It's what they write on, what your words and photographs sit against, and what you'll be turning through years from now.

Thin paper wrinkles. Shiny coated paper can be difficult to write on. And while I love a clean white page, I've always preferred the softer look of our Mohawk paper. It feels timeless rather than stark, and it lets handwritten messages take centre stage.

That's why I spend so much time choosing papers that feel beautiful in your hands as well as looking beautiful on a table.

When someone opens one of my books, I want their first thought to be,

"Oh... this is lovely."

A guestbook should be made to be written in.

One thing I've learned over the years is that beautiful doesn't have to mean delicate.

A guestbook needs to feel comfortable to write in. It needs enough room for real messages, not just signatures squeezed into tiny spaces. That's one of the reasons I offer plain pages or our custom page layouts, so guests have plenty of space to write without feeling cramped.

And the pages need to cope with enthusiastic grandparents, children drawing pictures, and the occasional slightly wobbly wedding guest.

Those are often the pages people laugh about years later.

Personal doesn't have to mean over the top.

I'm a little obsessed with foil stamping. Anyone who's followed My Guestbook for a while probably already knows that!

But my favourite designs are usually the simplest ones.

A beautifully chosen typeface.

A name.

A date.

Perhaps a meaningful quote printed on the first page.

The best personalisation feels like it belongs there rather than shouting for attention.

One of my favourite jobs. There's something incredibly satisfying about choosing each piece of brass type by hand before the foil press gets to work.

Trends come and go.

Over the years I've watched colours, fonts and trends come and go.

What I've noticed is that the books people still love years later are the timeless ones.

Beautiful materials.

Classic typography.

Quality craftsmanship.

Designs that let the memories take centre stage.

The messages inside will always be the most important part.

Think about the story, not just the day.

One of my favourite things about making guestbooks is imagining someone opening them years from now.

Maybe it's your first anniversary.

Maybe your children are looking through it decades later.

Maybe it's sitting on the coffee table after a family gathering, and everyone starts reading the messages again.

A guestbook isn't just for your wedding day or celebration.

It's one of the few things that often becomes more meaningful with time.

My favourite compliment

People sometimes email me months or even years after they've received their guestbook.

They don't usually tell me how nice the foil looked.

They tell me they've sat down with a cup of tea and read every message again.

Or that a grandparent who has since passed away filled an entire page.

Or that they hadn't realised just how much those handwritten words would mean.

Those emails are my favourite part of this job.

They're also a lovely reminder that I'm not really making books.

I'm helping people hold on to life's biggest moments.

And for me, that's what makes a beautiful guestbook.
